Description

The Unimportance of Form and Other Arguments collects the early writings of British designer Jasper Morrison, penned between 1984 and 2002 and compiled and edited by industrial designer Sina Sohrab. Published here for the first time in a single volume, these texts trace the genesis of the ideas that would later define his practice: the responsibilities of design, the value of usefulness, and the quiet authority of ordinary things. From his autobiographical manifestos and his 1985 thesis at the Royal College of Art (RCA) to later essays, reflections, and even notes for an unfinished novel, this collection of 31 texts captures the lifelong refinement of his thinking on what design is and what it should be. Taking its title from his 1991 essay The Unimportance of Form, one of his most incisive critiques on the role of the designer, the book offers rare access to the early thoughts of one of design’s most influential figures, from the ideas behind objects not yet iconic to reflections on his expanding relationship with industry. Celebrated for objects that seem like they were always meant to exist, Jasper is also a keen, skeptical, and often witty writer. A long-time contributor to the Apartamento world—including The Hard Life Notebook (2016) and his introduction to Miguel Milá: A Life in Design—this volume offers a unique insight into the formative ideas that would shape an extraordinary career.
