Active in street style, fashion, music and beyond, NIGO is a multifaceted artist, designer and creative director who has shaped contemporary culture for over three decades, ever since he founded the influential streetwear brand A Bathing Ape. His ability to draw from wide-ranging disciplines and cultural references has given rise to some of the most influential products in recent fashion history, such as the Bapesta sneaker. While partly inspired by American vintage, his clothing and footwear designs remain deeply rooted in Japanese subcultures. Tracing NIGO's inspirations, production and legacy from the 80s to the present day, *From Japan with Love* takes a chronological-thematic approach. NIGO's life story is mainly told through items from his personal archive and collections - many of which are published here for the first time. These include collectibles, clothing, music and film memorabilia and printed matter, supplemented by his voice and those of his colleagues. The book also explores NIGO's recent discovery of pottery, his apprenticeship with ceramic artists and his learning of the rituals of the Japanese tea ceremony. Tomoaki Nagao, known as NIGO (born 1970), founded the streetwear brand A Bathing Ape in 1993 and was its head designer for 20 years. He is a member of Teriyaki Boyz and Honest Boyz and has collaborated with artists such as Pharrell, ASAP Rocky and Flavor Flav. In 2021 he became artistic director of the luxury fashion house KENZO.
