From his autobiographical manifestos and his 1985 thesis at the Royal College of Art (RCA) to later essays, reflections, and even notes for an unfinished novel, this collection of 31 texts captures the lifelong refinement of his thinking on what design is and what it should be. Taking its title from his 1991 essay The Unimportance of Form, one of his most incisive critiques on the role of the designer, the book offers rare access to the early thoughts of one of design’s most influential figures, from the ideas behind objects not yet iconic to reflections on his expanding relationship with industry.
